Morero City

PROJECT BACKGROUND

A United Nations Report on the Kingdom of Lesotho done in 2016 revealed two opportunities within the country and its Capital. Firstly it recognised the backlog in economic housing provision. It highlighted the fact that many Lesotho people could in fact access mortgage facilities provided that properties developed be done so in a very cost-effective manner. Secondly, it showed the need for the city of Maseru to expand with density and not with urban sprawl as current settlement patterns indicate.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Vitruvius Consulting Engineers and Fourie | Architecture + Urban Design was approached to develop sub-economic housing that would satisfy the stringent economic parameters set out by the UN Report and the Post Bank of Lesotho. Only when this brief was completely satisfied with ingenuity and innovation were we given the go-ahead by the developer to develop an Urban Design Framework and Strategy for the entire development.
An Urban Design responding to the topography and location of the site and sight-lines from all round was developed. It focussed on creating an Urban extension to Maseru that would act as a development node between the existing city centre and the airport.
The Urban Design focusses on creating a hillside village with a Mixed-Use heart. It also aims to introduce modern elements speaking to the proud Basotho Culture to aid with Place Making and introduces an active and intensive Urban Agricultural component in the form of a greenbelt against the river.
The design also includes various green features like: Solar harvesting Alternative Sewer Treatment in the form of Package Plants A quarry to be rehabilitated into a lake with Solar pumps and filtration Parks and Ecological Reserves
