Sandton Urban Precinct
PROJECT BACKGROUND
The project was an invited competition put out by the Public Investment Corporation of South Africa. The site is located behind the Morningside Medi-Clinic in Sandton on the corner of Hill and Rivonia Roads.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project consisted of a run-down office park used by medical practitioners operating from the Morningside Medi-Clinic. The bulk rights for the property was increased substantially by the City of Johannesburg and this allowed the property to be redeveloped as a mixed-use urban precinct containing a Hotel, Apartments, Retail and Office space. The link with the hospital would be maintained and this would allow all the medical practitioners to be re-accommodated as well as new office uses unrelated to the medical professions.
The concept resulted in an Urban Environment focussed around a public square and included a public road that would increase permeability for a Sandton traffic conjestion perspective. It also allowed for neighbouring properties to redevelop as part of the development and add to the offering of the precinct as a whole.
The competition still has to be awarded due to the fact that the project was placed on hold by PIC internal processes
