The Park
PROJECT BACKGROUND
Due to a tourism expansion and the general development of the property market in the city bowl of Cape Town a trend of re-development of existing properties has emerged. Our client wanted to redevelop an existing three-storey apartment block into luxury accommodation for Cape Town’s increasingly trendy and upwardly mobile market.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Vitruvius Consulting Engineers and Fourie | Architecture + Urban Design was approached to develop a Concept Plan that would allow for the refurbishment and additions to the existing apartment block.
The design focused on updating the old existing building to a contemporary architectural look and feel, that allowed for maximum views (both sea and mountain). The design also had generated the feeling of large space without having that much space available. What made the project challenging was not only the fact that some of the units were not owned by the developer (and therefore had to be constructed around) but also the fact that the original structure was designed for the weight of 3 storeys only (therefor all new construction had to be light-weight alternative systems). The outcome of the project so far has been immensely pleasing and well-received by the market.
